mplayer // I am only getting audio for .mov files

I am using RedHat 9. I recently installed mplayer via apt-get. It is working great for mpeg video files.

I am trying to watch .mov Quicktime files from Gamespot.com but I am only getting the audio. I downloaded the quicktime codec stuff from the mplayer homepage but I have no idea where the files go. Any ideas?

how about some error messages / mplayer output...

have you actually recompiled mplayer with qt support? you can't just add it in as and when, it's linked at compile time. check the ./configure output from mplayer before you recompile to get it going right.

Cannot find codec matching selected -vo and video format 0x33515653

That's the message I get but it does start up with the audio before I even click OK on the error box.

I got it!

The DLLs I downloaded from mplayerhq.hu just needed to be dropped in the right folder.

/usr/lib/win32

After I dropped the DLLs in the folder it worked great. The picture is 10 times better than the Quicktime for windows or the Mac.

A little trouble getting it running, but once you get it, it is sweet.

If u're using mandrake simply go to run and type 'kpackage' and
it will be straightforward to use. Otherwise:
1. Type rpm --query mplayer
2. See the output [something like 'mplayer-0.90XXX'
3. Type rpm --erase mplayer-0.90XXX [whatever u saw in step2]
Should work.

.mov = Quicktime movies

new Quicktime movies use the Sorenson codec.
