mplayer freezes after playback starts

I'm trying to get the latest build of mplayer working on SuSE 9.2, but it freezes after starting playback of any video I try.

I downloaded the mplayer source (MPlayer v1.0pre6a source), libavcodec, and ogg vorbis codecs. I installed the codecs first, then mplayer. nothing appeared to be wrong with the ./configure for mplayer, except I noticed it didn't detect ALSA, but did pick up OSS.

When I run mplayer from command line, and open any video, it'll play for about 10 seconds and then freeze. There's no stuttering of audio or video during this time. I lose control of everything & have to manually reset the computer to restore functionality. I tried uninstalling everything (mplayer + codecs) and reinstalling. No such luck. The freezing seems to only happen with mplayer. I'm not very familiar with logfiles which probably detail what is happening.

Oh, and I'm reading the video files from an NTFS partition on a different drive if it helps.

Hmm... That sucks!
I'm not a mplayer specialist, but i think there's a problem with codecs. I'm running mplayer-1.0-0.pre6.7plf, and my distro is Mandrake. Don't know if Suse has got any problems with dependencies, but here's list of dependencies for my mplayer:
divx4linux-20020418-3plf.i586
libbio2jack0-0.4-0.101plf.i586
libdivx4linux0-20020418-3plf.i586
liblame0-3.96.1-1plf.i586
libpolypaudio0.7-0.7-0.1.101plf.i586
libxvid4-1.0.3-1plf.i586
mplayer-1.0-0.pre6.7plf.i586
real-codecs-1.2-1plf.i586
win32-codecs-1.6-3plf.i586
xanim-codecs-1.0-3plf.i586

Try to install those packages, and also try another video player or mplayer's previous versions, in case if it's software version conflict. You can try playing video with kaffeine, it's really nice, but i'm using mplayer. :P Hope that helps you.

Looks like the codecs were the problem! I took another look and found that none of them were in the default codec directory for mplayer ( /usr/local/lib/codecs ). Copied them over & ran mplayer again, now there's no more problems :D

I normally would use kaffeine, but it doesn't support xvid or vorbis from what I've been able to figure out.

Thanks much!
