mplayer for music cds?

I would like a player the can play music cds. It seems most players need that cable that connects your cdrom to the soundcard. I do not have that cable. My thought is, if mplayer can play dvds, vcds, svcds, it should be able to play music cds. I did ./congigure --help and did not see any options for that. I also did "mplayer music cds" in google , no luck

that cable connects the sound decoder in the cdrom to the sound card - hence you can have earphones plugged into a cdrom and hear music - you pick them up for about 1 in the uk, but it is fairly vital - the reason dvd's work is the decodeing is done off board by software - sorry if this isn't much help

you would think their would be softare available that would decode music cds in the same way. Two common windows apps, music match, and windows media player, both play without the cable. I just need to look harder to find it(linux app)

It really wouldn't be worth installing another application, or trying to get a Windows application running in WINE just to save the $2 that the cable would cost.

To be honest I hardly ever play music cds on my computer. It just seems like such a needed program, you would have thought their would be one coded. So many of the mass prodeuced computer do not come with the cable.

At least in terms of simplicity and minimizing the time and effort needed to fix this, I'd agree 100% with MS3FGX -- just buying the cable for $2 or $3 is probably the best solution. If those cables were hard to find or would set you back $40 or $50 it would be another story, but fortunately they are easy to find and inexpensive. -- J.W.

Sorry, I haven't read through all the posts. Did you get mplayer to play audio cd?
You can get it to by opening the playlist and navigating to the cd, I'm sure you can do th rest.
