mplayer doesn't work after upgrading graphic card
I upgraded my old Matrox millenium mga200 pci to a nVidia geforce 6600GT pci-e. Now the mplayer doesn't work. The mplayer says "Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device" when I try to play something. Do I need to do something after upgrading my graphic card? Do I need to reinstall the mplayer or some other programs?

No need to re-install. It's a simple config problem.
You can edit /etc/mplayer/config or ~/.mplayer/config to fix the problem. /.mplayer/config overrides /etc/mplayer/config, so if you edit the file in /etc, and the error is in ~/.mplayer, your fix won't work.
The fix: from a console window, run 'mplayer -vo help' to see a list of available devices. Your current config probably has the default vo=xv. Try changing it to other devices, one at a time, until you get one that works.
I had the same problem. Changed mine to vo=gl, and it works a dream now.

Thank you for your help. I changed the vo_driver setting to vo_driver=x11 and I can now play my .mpg file.
Here's something odd though: I am trying to play that exact same file via a Windows Share (d$) and MPlayer won't play the file. I have tried double-clicking the file and right-clicking it and selecting MPlayer as the application to play the file - no success though. I like to play movies/music off of my file server instead of having to transfer them to the computer I want to view/play them on. What do you think is causing MPlayer to not play the file over the network?
Thanks again for your help,
*Nick*

Did you change your X11 driver to nv or install the official nvidia drivers?

hhmm, I just changed the "vo_driver=" setting to "vo_driver=x11" - that's all. Is there something else I should change or install?
The same thing is happening when I try to play some audio files over the network - XMMS won't play them unless I copy the files to my FC4 computer. This is all on a home network.
I'm connecting to the Windows share (d$) with an administrative account. I can successfully browse the share.
Any thoughts/suggestions?
Thanks,
*Nick*

If you're using something generic in your xorg.conf it doesn't matter whether you're using a video card from the late 80s or the Geforce 7800GTX 512 - you're going to see the same performance. Put what distro you're using in your profile so we know what to post instructions (or more likely links) for...

Are you new to the internet as well? If not, searching for stuff should be no drama.
I'm more than happy to help but not to hold your hand. You'll learn considerably more if you figure a few things out on your own with a nudge in the right direction. The "use the nvidia drivers" was the nudge, you figure out what to do next.
