mplayer doesn't communicate with mjeptools

I've been using linux for about 10 years.
I've used mplayer a lot and mjpegtools a little in the past.
What I'm doing is playing a DVD and re-encoding to fit a smaller file size to fit a single layer Disc.
I do this:
mkfifo stream.yuv
mplayer dvd://1 -nosound -noframedrop -alang en -vo yuv4mpeg

In another window I do this:
cat stream.yuv | mpeg2enc -f8 -b6000 -o test.mpg

and I get this message.

**ERROR: [mpeg2enc] Could not read YUV$MPEG@ header: system error (failed read/write)!

if instead of piping it to the mjepegtools function I redirected to a file it works and I can replay the file, I just can't get mjepegtools to recognize it.
Thanks
John
