mplayer: command line to list installed video codecs?

Hi,

Is there anyway for mplayer to report what video codecs are installed and available for use on the machine it is running on.

The "mplayer -vc help" seems to report every video codec that was known to the mplayer team at the version release time.

However I want to know what codecs are installed on my machine.

I've done a good trawl through the man page, but have come up short.

Thanks for any help on this one.
Marty

I use 'aboutlugins' in the browser address bar.

Try "locate '/codecs/'". There may be one directory in /lib/codecs and another in /usr/lib/codecs/. One may be a link to the other. Also look for /lib/win32. Sometimes you will find codecs in there as well.

Some of the codecs listed by mplayer may be built statically into the program. Ffmpeg and lavc may be built statically into your copy of mplayer. I think they may have native support for some codecs built into their libraries.
