mplayer codecs installed before compile?

Can the codecs for mplayer be added after you compile? If I read the documentation correctly, you need to have them before you compile. It seems like I read conflicting answers.

i dont _think_ u need a recompile, i know i was missing some of the win32 codecs for whatever reason and got them and stuck them in the /usr/local/lib/win32 dir and mplayer uses them just fine.

Win32 codecs: If you plan to use MPlayer on x86 architecture, you will possibly need them. Download the Win32 codecs from our codecs page and install them to /usr/local/lib/codecs BEFORE compiling MPlayer, otherwise no Win32 support will be compiled!
can we say that you were plain lucky to have win32 codecs working for you?
