MPlayer - can't delay audio!

I don't know why, but Xine seems to skip loads of frames, and I get pauses lasting about a second, every few seconds. So, I decided to try MPlayer.

MPlayer played every frame, really slowly. It was totally out of sync with the audio. But after enabling frame dropping, it's almost perfect. Now, the video and audio seem to be running at the same speed, but the audio is still about a second behind the video.

I noticed an option under audio preferences - audio delay. I thought, perfect, I can set that to about -1 seconds. But... it doesn't store the setting! I press ok, go back to audio preferences, and it's set to 0 again! I can't see anything about this in ~/.mplayer/gui.conf either!

What's with this? Is it a bug? I'm using MPlayer 1.0pre4-RPM-3.2.2. Anyone know how I can get this working?
