Mplayer & Subtitles

I have an avi file and a srt subtitle file that I'm trying to play together. I've renamed them so they read movie.avi movie.srt and when I attempt to play the movie the subtitles do not appear on screen. However mplayer gives this output:

Code:
VIDEO: [XVID] 592x320 12bpp 23.976 fps 849.2 kbps (103.7 kbyte/s)
Clip info:
 Software: Nandub v1.0rc2
SUB: Detected subtitle file format: subviewer
SUB: Read 878 subtitles.
SUB: Adjusted 2 subtitle(s).
SUB: Added subtitle file (1): ./movie.srt
I get this output regardless of how I attempt to play the file (mplayer movie.avi -sub movie.srt or just mplayer movie.avi). I know the srt and avi files work (xine plays them no problem). Any ideas on why the subtitles aren't being displayed? Any help is appreciated.

If you look in the mplayer man page you'll see a few switches and settings that control aspects of displaying subtitles, first ones I'd check.
