mplayer and intelligent streaming

I have recently installed mplayer from source on my slackware box with no problems. I have also installed the mplayer-plugin into mozilla and firebird. This works fine and I can now view streamed video including micro$oft asf files............

However, apparently the micro$oft media streaming format apparently allows for "intelligent streaming" where the stream sent to you is optimised to your bandwidth/connection. Using mplayer I can only seem to view the smallest streams ie the streams for a 56k modem. I imagine the micro$oft media player has some facility to choose which stream would be optimal as I can watch the same streams at a much higher quality over my adsl connection.

How can I make mplayer selct a better stream??

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
