I haven't compiled mplayer myself for a long time. The rpm's work fine for me. They should already be compiled to support every available codec. If you really want to compile it yourself they have complete instructions on the home page. Then you can post questions if you get stuck somewhere.

Did you try a different video driver on the command line?

its gui I can only select from three

why can I get no help?
I explained it very well...
I installed through apt-get with an RPM
apparently it didnt come with my codecs since I cant play anything
either that or the video driver is the problem in which case I only have 3 driver in preferances and I have tried all three

NONE of them will play ANY files I also cant play music files...
how do I set it up to run with my video out then?

I have a geforce4 ti4400 and the newest driver for it so you tell me.....

ALSO my codecs.conf file has nothing in it neither does the config file

Open up a terminal and type "gmplayer -vo help"
It should show more than 3 video output drivers. Then pick one and try it. You can add a line like "vo=sdl" to your ~/.mplayer/config file

The rpms work fine for most people. Maybe your video card/driver is exceptional?

Maybe there's something wrong with the "newest driver." Can you try any different ones?

You could try this one:

http://valhalla.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=342

I have xine-0.9.21-fr1 but it's from shrike.freshrpms.net

You could try to compile the source rpm like this:

rpmbuild --rebuild xine-0.9.21-fr1.src.rpm

http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrp...21-fr1.src.rpm

It's kind of lame, you actually have to add a file to a playlist through the gui. I prefer to associate the files with xine (and mplayer) so I can just click on them in Konqueror.

If you want to try it quickly on the command line:

xine <file>

You can just run it once to set the default, like this:

xine -A arts

xine --help

Usage: xine [OPTIONS]... [MRL]

OPTIONS are:
-v, --version Display version.
--verbose [=level] Set verbosity level. Default is 1.
-c, --config <file> Use config file instead of default one.
-V, --video-driver <drv> Select video driver by id. Available drivers:
aadxr3 dxr3 xv SyncFB xshm aa none sdl vidixfb vi
dix fb
-A, --audio-driver <drv> Select audio driver by id. Available drivers:
null alsa oss arts esd
