Do you have /dev/dvd linked to your actual device? What is the exact command you used to play the file or are you using the GUI?

I'm using the gui, I can access the files when i mount the dvd, but I try to play it, and it does that. I did the link everything worked quite well, as far as the install, but could be questionable. I 'm a newb, I was working at of a book called: Red Hat linux 9.0 for dummies, at the time of writing the book, the current version was 7. So trying to guess at what I had to pick from was difficult when it came time to download mplayer, because obviously there are newwer versions since then. So maybe I got the out date mplayer? If you know what I need to download to reinstall, i'd rather do that. Do I need to un-install? if so, How?

Thanx- natebo

But you are not trying to play some file... you are trying to play a DVD as a single entity. you need to access it as device level, simply clikcing on a .vob file will not get you anywhere. so IS the /dev/dvd link correct?
