.mpg player in Slackware
 

I know this is probably a stupid question, but is there already a media player that is capeable of playing this already installed and if so what is the command, if not what would be the best one to get?

You might find some KDE tools to do it, or sometimes people claim to use XMMS for them.

You might also already have xine installed, it might work as well. However, the best is FAR above the rest, and it's link is above ;)

I downloaded Mplayer, decompressed and installed it, but im having issues trying to get it to just play the .mpg it seems pretty powerful, but it will not simply play the movie. Do you use any GUIs or just command line?

Both, I'm a simple kinda guy, whatever works I like ;)

However I tend to use the command line more often than not, simply for speed and control.

What command are you using to play the file?
