MP3=Crash

Whenever I try to play an audio file (mainly MP3s), my computer crashes. the entire thing locks up and makes me feel like im using windows (minus the blue screen). it happens no matter what program i use to listen to 'em.....rhythmbox, mplayer, muine, mpg123, you name it, it doesnt work. it also crashes when i try to plat games with sound, mainly ut2004. it also crashes 50% of the time when i watch movies...dvd's, avi's, etc....i tried reinstalling mplayer and rhythmbox and gstreamer. my roommate suggested i run 'gst-register-0.8' to load all the plugins an such....that worked up until i tried to watch a dvd....it locked up, then after rebooting, it still didnt work. this is very annoying because what good is a computer if you cant listen to music, watch movies, and play games?
It worked perfectly before i broke my install and had to reinstall arch. ive also had no problems with suse, mandrake, fedora, knoppix, and ubuntu.
i know the sound works...it plays for a few seconds (sometimes for half a song, other times right when i hit play...its kinda random).
does anyone have any suggestions?
im running arch .7, kernel 2.6.10, CMedia sound card, alsa 1.0.8-1, gnome 2.8
if you need more information, feel free to ask

Humm.. That is weird. I'd say all signs point to the device driver though, maybe alsa but probably not. My suggestion is to rebuild your driver. I don't know the _proper_ way to do this but I had an issue like this and I simply removed the driver with "make menuconfig" and built the kernel. Then I inserted the driver back into the config and rebuilt the kernel. Then I copied the image to /boot and did a modules-update. I think modules-update is Gentoo only.

Hope that helps, It worked for me with a stubborn wifi driver.

any log messages?

How do you know it has locked up; have you tried to ssh in from another computer? Could be that just X is locked and if you can access from someplace else you can figure out what is happening.

Llama...
ive broken my install too many times trying to recompile the kernel....id prefer not doing that again....i have yet to have a succesful recompile....
ill try building alsa fron source, tho....when i installed it, i just did a pacman -S alsa-libs alsa-utils (which is what ive always done). ill try that and post the results.

jim...
what logs are you lookin for? /var/log/messages.log, Xorg.0.log, Xorg.1.log, errors.log.....none of 'em have anything out of the ordinary...is there anything specifically you want to see?
i know it locked up b/c 1. my network lights turn off on my card. 2. i cant ssh....i cant even ping it 3. everything stops 4. i have to hit the reset button....no ctrl-alt-backspace or ctrl-alt-delete....

Just any log info at all. If there is none, then there is none.

Looks to me, too, like a driver issue. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling your sound drivers? What happens if you stop/restart your sound system (Alsa?) from the shell? Do you get an error message then?

The last time I had a system go unstable like that it was because I had a HD controller failure (adaptec 29160) and my system became corrupted by read/write errors. I replaced the controller and reinstalled the system.

i uninstalled the alsa that i pacmaned, then recompiled alsa using ./configure --with-cards=cmipci....after that was done, i rebooted (just to be sure everything reloaded), it worked up until i did a pacman -Syu while listening to music....then it locked up....im running alsa 1.0.8

hope that helps......right now, i have my walkman hooked up to my speakers so i can have some music.....the UT withdrawl is starting to set in....
