Question Mozilla doesn't work for user-profile

Newbie Alert! =)

Hello,

I'm new to this forum as a posting member, although I've read a lot of useful tips here in my attempts to leave windows behind. Thanks for sharing all the time and information!

However, I couldn't find a topic dealing with my current problem. I'm probably just being thick, but anyway, here goes...

I'm only able to start Mozilla as root, which I realize is not a good idea when using it to surf the net. As a normal user, it doesn't come up.

Here's what I did:

I installed Slackware 9.1, logged in as root and fiddled around with the configuration (X, iptables, sane etc.) to get everything cosy. I started X and, among other tings, launched Mozilla 1.4 (comes with Slack9.1).

Then I created my user-account and logged into it. Mozilla worked fine at this point, but I couldn't install any plugins. So back to the root for installing mouse gestures and prefbar.

But after that, I wasn't able to get Moz going for the user. I tried to fiddle with the Moz-profiles, but to no avail.

Can anybody remove the tomatoes from my eyes? What am I overlooking?

Thanks in advance,
- FurrySpider -

if i recall correctly, you have to change some permissions when you install mouse gestures. don't know about the prefbar. but if i read you right you're saying mozilla worked before you installed those two things, so how about it -- are you sure they are installed properly, with the correct permissions and everything?

Thanks for the reply, synaptical!
You're absolutely right, too. I feel like a moron. I was searching through several help boards, but I didn't think of going to Optimoz. Doh! They have it right there, in their FAQ:

--- blatantly ripped from optimoz.mozdev.org ---

Permission issues in mozilla/bin/chrome are a larget issue with the Mozilla XPI system. Installing as root and chmod -R *' in the mozilla/chrome/mozgest directory will help non-root users use chrome add-ons. Exact details follow:

1. Launch mozilla as root and install Mouse Gestures.
2. Then issue the following commands:
* cd mozilla/chrome/mozgest #Note: up to you to figure out where the mozilla directory is
* chmod -R 755 * #Issue command as root

--- rip-mode off ---

I hope they don't mind my posting this here...

Anyway, thanks a bunch!
