mozilla, dependencies, rpm...

I have read the other posts in here and elsewhere from others who have similar questions. basically want to upgrade mozilla so I can upgrade galeon, which I like a lot. There are
dependency issues...
libstdc++.so.4 and libpng.so.3 are two of three that I got from rpmfind and tried to install, the depndencies of my whole system seemed to be listed, failing it...my question is, if iinstall telling it to ignore dependencies, will these programs.....there are like 30--work with the upggraded version, is the rpm system just giving me a heads up, or will nothing work because it wants its old version of libgcc_s*?

I don't want to upgrade my entire system to get a new version of galeon running...I read about the difference between installing from source as opposed to rpm and wish I understiood that better...
Maybe I should learn a lot more before upgrading stuff, but that is kinda how I learn. I have learned enough about reinstalling linux becuse taking the "see what happens" attitude too far, though!

DO NOT IGNORE DEPENDANCY WARNINGS.

(Sorry for shouting). What distro are you using? I have upgraded (by hand) a RedHat 7.0 system to the point that I now run Mozilla 0.9.8 and Galeon 1.1.3 (dev).

Is it that the RPM's you grabbed from rpmfind are the very latest and perhaps are more recent than is really necessary?

I am running:-

libstdc++-2.96-97.1
libpng-1.0.8-1

I have libc++-2.96-98 and libpng 1.0.12-2

how did you do that---incrementally?

rpm -Uvh rpmname.rpm

will upgrade an rpm. generally it's worth trying to keep dependencies happy as far as possible, even if only for piece of mind at time. frequently the rpm's will be fine, as the same files DO exist, it just doesn't know. not sure why that happends, just does...

if it's asking for an older version of something, you can ususally do fine just making a symlink from the newer file to the old one

for the record

dnar---you were right...I just stepped down one notch in the versions I installed of both mozilla and galeon and there was no hitch.
good!
