Mozilla & MozFireBird gets Error launching
 

Dear All,
I receive an alert each time I try to start either Mozilla or MozillaFirebird under Gnome 2.2 in Debian Sid.
The essage is:

Error launching browser window:TypeError:
Components.classes['@mozilla.org/appshell/component/browser/instance;1'] has no properties

I tried several things like:
- remove all .moz* directories from user's home,
- run as root,
- remove Mozilla and re-install it,
- remove MozillaFirebird and re-install.

Some days, I can start it once and then if in the same day (wether I reboot or not) I cn not tart it again without getting the message.

What's wrong ?

I would guess that this problem has something to do with a lock file not being deleted when it is no longer needed. Check through the .moz* trees for suspicious looking lock files.

No lock files (^lck$) appear in the .moz* tree.
And if it did, how comes that the error happens eventhough I deleted the .moz* tree. ?

So does anyone know another possible cause for this problem ?

I have a similar problem. I try to start either firebird or mozilla and I get asked to select a different profile because the first is already in use....even though no other ones are running. I can make a new profile and click OK and it just dissappears. Firebird is shown in the running process list but where??

BTW even though Firebird and Mozilla won't run ThunderBird works fine

What FB/Mozilla version? Looks like missing files in app, or bad installed extension.

I don't think so.....it was running fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled...hell I even rebooted!! Also I can run them both fine if I open a consule and change to root and then start the apps as root.

But "@mozilla.org/appshell/component/browser/instance;1" is one of a base Gecko services, it cannot be "not implemented". Meaby app doesn't have rights to files in Mozilla app folder? Dunna know :(

Hmmm sound much like the same problem.....

I got some "solution". This error the orginal poster had is that the Debian Mozilla Version (it's different from the official mozilla.org builds, so this doesnt happen with official builds) uses some startup script. You can't open Mozilla when you have Thunderbird open, Firebird might work (anyway on my pc this also doesnt work; it starts a new Firebird window instead of Mozilla).
Now to the technical side of this, DONT READ IF YOU ARENT INTERESTED ;):
They modified the startscript of Debian Mozilla, so that it uses the x-remote thingy to send a command to FB/TB/Mozilla/whatever. That causes that the Mozilla startscript sends a command to Thunderbird "open a browserwindow". This of course doesnt work, because Thunderbird isnt a browser *g*.

I could always run both thunderbird and firebird together. The fix to get firebird to run again was to download the tar version not the rpm. I simply extracted the files and run the program from the new directory. It started and all my bookmarks etc were still there. So I don't know exactly what the problem was but am certainly happy again. Firebird is a great browser. Hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem

anyone got any ideas on how to get an aol account to work with linux

reply to mcsmurf....I,m running redhat v9. I use firebird and thunderbird together, no problem. I even got java to work.
