mozilla & java run time environment(applet)

I have problems viewing applets with my mozilla browser. I have fedora core 2.
So i downloaded jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.bin from java.com/en site.
Then i installed it acc to the instructions given on the site.
At the end of installation it displayed done as it was expected to show.
I have mozilla1.6.
After that
i perform the following commands:
cd /usr/lib/lib/mozilla-1.6/plugins
ln -s /root/java/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
then i opened my mozilla Edit->preferences->Advanced- and then i checked Enable java.
clicked OK
Tried to open a n applet but it didn't work.
I rebooted my system & then tried again but again it didn't work.
plz help.
