Mozilla and Java

Imagine my frustration when, as a new user of Mozilla, none of my Java-scripted web sites would work. No online email, no DSL speed test, no Java chat, no nothing. While perusing the Help menu I check "About Plug-Ins" and discover that every conceivable form of Java is plugged in and enabled. I searched here, there and everywhere for the solution. A few hours later and after noticing that Konqueror could deal with Java scripts (albeit poorly) I decided to check Konqueror's configuration. Right there under Settings | Configure Konqueror is a great big icon labeled "Java and Java Script". Back to Mozilla, I decide to scour the entire configuration setup from top to bottom. Lo and behold! There under Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Scripts & Plugins is the option to enable JavaScript, disabled by default.

Was it a smart thing to leave JavaScript disabled by default and disorient the user, preventing him from getting his work done and costing him time in tracing the problem while at the same time protecting him from himself?

Was it a stupid thing to leave JavaScript disabled by default with all of the above-described consequences?

It all depends on enabling or disabling really IMHO. I keep mine enabled as many sites have javascript in them. Most of the time I'm not worried about anything that might be malicious or anything of the such. I do however keep java disabled, slow and only stalls my browser as I don't have it installed on my machines.
