Moving NIS master to another server...
Folks,
I had a couple ways to go on this, one being that I could just start over, and the other I could just move it. I choose the latter, with the former as a backup.
All of the information can be obtained from the O'Reilly book Managing NIS and NFS, Chapter 2 & 4.
1. Bring up the the new server as a client with ypbind to get the inital maps..
2. Add the new server to ypservers and run make -C /var/yp
3. Run ypinit -s ypxfr should transfer all the maps to the slave server. The book describes to use makedbm, but I could get this work.
4. Each map needs to be rebuilt on the new server. Copy over the Makefile and source files. do not push them out to the server(s) make NOPUSH=1
5. Copy the new maps (from the new master) to the old server and run 'ypxfr -h newmaster -f passwd.byname' and do this to all the maps. This force the old master server to get the new maps from the newmaster server.
6. If you have additional slave servers you push these maps to the existing slaves.
