Movie DVDs: Backed up and playing too fast

I recently installed kdvdbackup along with the "css" security library and (I
believe) the correct codecs. I am trying to backup my movie
collection to my hard drive.

Essentially, I am (usually) able to do this. However, when I try to
play the movies, they are usually (after adding the VOB files to a
playlist in Kaffeine) running too fast. Typically the movie is only
about 75 minutes in length for a movie that is really supposed to be
about 115 minutes in length. Not sure why this is. Also, the exact
same thing seems to happen when I use dvd::rip (which I also installed
to see if I got better results).

It's probable that the backed-up recording has been decoded to run
this fast. Or, it's something with the player, but I think that's
less likely.

Recommendations and things to try would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried looking for PAL/NTSC options? never used this particular piece of software, but the speed up sounds about right for the difference between the formats.

Thanks for the start. No idea, because I'm not sure what that means (though I will google for this). I just used the default options. However, I did notice the tracks in dvd::rip were NTSC at 23.976 fps (frames per second, I suppose) at 720x480. Any tips as to what it should be and how to update this? I saw an option to run at 25 or 29 fps, but that seems like the movie would play even faster.

I just had a weird after-thought too. Could it possibly be some kind of a jumper setting or something, you think...on the DVD player itself? I'll go look at the jumpers. Doubt it though.

No it won't be the drive. NTSC is the American/japan TV standard, and PAL is the European/Australia most of the rotw standard.

PAL runs at 50Hz, NTSC runs at 60Hz but with a lower vertical resolution.

PAL DVDs 720x576 at 25 fps.
NTSC DVDs 720x480 at 29.97 fps.

Changing the option to 25fps when you rip them will slow the video down, because your ripping there maybe frame dropping, but that will be compensated for in the file, if its ripping to fast the file will play to fast.

Had no such issues out of the box in Ubuntu.

Not sure if this was ever solved, but it's old, so marking SOLVED.
For what it's worth, I moved to Ubuntu from Suse (and Gnome from KDE 3.1) and have had far fewer issues. Granted, Ubuntu and the underlying kernel are obviously *far* newer. Likewise with the desktop environment comparison. So, take it or leave it, and ignore at will.
