Mouting bootable CD as root

I have been following the tutorial on making a Linux live CD (en.tldp.org/HOWTO/Diskless-HOWTO-3.html), however I am having a problem mounting the cdrom as root. I get the following error:

kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k ide-cd, errno = 2
VFS: Cannot open root device "hdb" or 03:40
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:40

I have "root=/dev/hdb" in syslinux.cfg.

Any help would be appreciated,

Did you compile cdrom support into the kernel or as a module? My guess is that it was done as a module and modprobe can't find it when you boot the CD.

I was as a module, but I just tried recompiling it as part of the kernel, but still get the same error

I also tried putting the module file in the initrd, also to no effect.

Help.
