mouse pointer in linux console program called bitmap

The Linux Program "BITMAP" installed in every distribution of Linux.
The bitmap program is a rudimentary tool for creating or editing rectangular images made up of 1's and 0's.
After installing Mint the "bitmap" program is started up (type bitmap at the command prompt).
The touchpad (or mouse) points and clicks inside the grid to select individual pixels. (drawing the icon pixel by pixel)
The program worked fine post Mint install....but subsequently, the touchpad can still select the drawing commands but will not select pixels from the grid.
Have tried reinstalling synaptic drivers for the touchpad but only re-installing a fresh copy of Mint has worked.
The Program from Linux man pages bitmap(1) "bitmap, bmtoa, atobm - bitmap editor and converter utilities for the X Window System"
Can anyone help fix this issue. Thank you!
