Mouse malfunction with KDE 3.1

Hi. I searched the forums for this sort of problem but didn't find a similar one.

Have Mandrake 9.2 and KDE 3.1, and system was working fine. Yesterday changed to a new (optical) mouse from the old ball mouse. Seemed to work ok, but today, after reboot, the mouse is nearly non-functioning. It will move the pointer, but the left button works only 10% of the time and the right button not at all. Moving the ball or the optical mouse across the mouse pad makes it seem as though the center mouse wheel is being turned, which leads to scrolling.

Command line seems to work ok, but otherwise the system is very slow. "Top" shows little resources in use.

The system is dual-boot with Windows, and both mice work fine with that, so I know it's not hardware.

Checked the setting in Mandrake Control Center, and the proper mouse is selected.

I've been using Linux actively for two years and never had this sort of problem. Could trying to change the mouse have lead to this?

Thanks for any help.
