mounting windows share with samba?

Hi
when I try to mount my friend's share xp folder in console with
mount -t smbfs -o john //john/"My Documents" /mnt/hd/xp
it gives me

ERROR: smbfs filesystem not supported by the kernel
Please refer to the smbmnt(8) manual page
smbmnt failed: 255

but if I open konqueror, i can open my friend's share folder just fine.
What is wrong with this?

How can I make my linux box appear in my home network?

Your kernel does not have support for smbfs, so if you want this option you have to re-compile it.
Else you can use smbmount like this:

thank you. I will recompile then

but why can i mount my friend's folder thru konqueror if my kernel doesn't support smbfs? so konqueror doesn't use samba to connect to my friend's folder?
