Motion - Resolution Stuck at 176x144

I'm on Debian 8 using the software motion to record/capture a USB Logitech C270 (which is supposed to support 720p) I've already tried changing the width and to height to various things (320x140 or 960x480 or something like that) and I've tried changing the vfl2_palette or whatever to MPEJG or JPEG but the camera stream stops working. Right now it is using, I believe YUVU, but I can't change the resolution at all and it's stuck at 176x144.

what's wrong with it?
