most essential apps

I just built my box app by app from a bare-X install. Here's my list of apps.

Do you know of better alternatives to any of these, and why do you prefer your alternative?

Also, feel free to post your list of most used apps for others to dissect.

Fluxbox
Xtart
Digikam, digikam-plugins
Aterm
Gnumeric
Abiword
Gimp2
GQView
XMMS
Madman
Amule
Firefox
Mozilla-Firefox
Sylpheed-claws, some plugins
Pysol
K3B, K3B-dvd
Linuxconf
Firestarter
Dvdbackup
StreamDVD, StreamAnalyze

Re: most essential apps

Do you need Thunderbird possibly?

My list is this
  • Gaim
  • Xchat
  • Azureus
  • Mozilla
  • xpdf
  • open office
  • The Gimp
  • xmms
These are what I spend about 99% of my time using.

I usually only end up using:

Gaim
Mozilla or Firefox (there are some things firefox just won't do, so i've installed both; I also use mozilla for mail)
several xterms
gkrellm
BitTornado
mplayer

...all running under enlightenment.

i prefer gthumb over gqview (although gqview is also very good -- fast). other must haves are gftp, gedit/tea, and mplayer, although i'm really liking xine these days, too.
