I am trying to install Red Hat 9 (from CD-ROM). After booting from the CD, the installation program initialises, then after a time my monitor acts as though the computer has switched off...it goes blank, and the green power light flashes, though the tower is quite clearly still running.
Any ideas on why this happens/how I can prevent it from happening?
You may try with text based installation procedure. Also check the Hardware compatiblity List (HCL) in this site for your graphics card and monitor to ensure that these are supported by Linux. It may help you to find the problem.
When you insert the installation CD, and the installation starts to run, the first screen prompts you for directions as to how to install the distro. If i am not mistaken, on that same screen, there is also a prompt where you can type commands.
Thanks for the help so far, I've checked my hardware on the list and that all seems to be in order, but unfortunately I'm having trouble trying your suggestions since now when I try to boot from the installation disc, Im getting
"Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM : Failure...
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"
(grrrrrrr)
as far as I know I haven't actually done/changed anything so I'm slightly confused by this.
1st U have to put your CDrom as a first choice on your bios boot selection .
I had a problem like that , and some distro let U install the CDrom driver so that it can be recognize by linux. Some other let U go into chroot enviroment and mount the CDrom so that you can begin the reading and installation of the CD
The CD-ROM is already the primary boot device, so that's not the problem. Apologies, but I'm not sure I quite understand the rest of that advice sum1 care to explain?
If your Cd-rom is set as the primary boot device on your system and you are getting this error, then it can be two (2) things;
Ensure that the disc is not dirty or damaged, scratched or something. Once you have verified this, then I would look at the disc drive itself. try changing that drive.
In my work environment I have had numerous occassions when I had to swap drives in order to boot a cd.
............ Some drive just do not like certain cds......
Mmmmm I was hoping it wouldn't come to that...Ah well. It just annoys me that this drive has booted that very CD before, and since then I haven't done anything...Well I'll try making another copy of the disc and see what happens there, then I can consider another drive...
