Yes you can but read the Readme file which is part of the .tar.bz2 package it shows you how to install but still maintain the previous modutils package should you wish to Boot into your 2.4.2 Kernel
I've just checked this README file and will have to take care of it. I have a further question. Do I have to recompile the kernel after I have installed the new "module-init-tools" package ? My question may be silly, but
I wonder if the updates I did not do for several packages mentioned in the "/usr/src/2.6.2/Documentation/Changes" file had to be done before compiling the kernel! Moreover as I mentioned in the thread kernel panic with a new kernel (V2.6.2) in "Linux - Newbie" forum, "make dep" told me there was nothing to be done (or something like this).
Hope not, otherwise I will have to do all the procedure !!
This is from an article on migrating to a 2.6 Kernel
Compiling the kernel
It's only
make
make modules_install.
and when you are lazy
make install
No more 'make dep', 'make modules', 'make clean' ...
'make install' will save you the labour of copying the kernel image and system.map over to the /boot directory and of adjusting /boot/grub/menu.lst (or lilo.conf).
So 'make dep' is now obsolete, here's a link if you want to read it
Been reading through this topic, and there are several references to module-init-tools being part of the Mandrake distribution... I just installed 10.0, and using the RPM manager I can't find anything that includes the text module-init in the detailed description, or the name... The link listed for the RPM file is now a dead link, so that didn't get me there either... The other distribution site listed runs MANY different versions... Which would be the right one for 2.6.3 (Mandrake 10.0)??
I was only saying I used 3.0 version source code and not any rpm and...mmmm.....well I thought you were using src.rpm and wanted to warn you that only installs source-code (or, at least, I suppose).
Well...I believe...uhm.... :-D
Anyway you should have 0.9.x version in your distro's cds :-)
No problem.. I thought the RPM was compressed in the gzip, but you're right it's the sources.. I'll build and install it, thats no problem...
I looked for the string: "module-init" in rpmdrake 10.0, and it claims nothing was found... I also searched for "^mo" in the names, and got some mathmatical model tools, but no module-init-tools... I also tried just "mod" anywhere in the name, and got hits for tons of apache modules, but no module-init-tools... Any thoughts on how else I could find the RPM in the distribution media??
Many, many thanks for the help. You are saving me time, and thats important for me right now! I appreciate it very much!
:-D I'm happy I've been useful :-D
Well I searched thru' 9.2 cds, not in 10's (I cannot install it on my laptop for I have some problems with the kernel)
Look: if you have some problems with ld options (I don't remember exactly) while compiling module-init-tools just instal glibc-static-devel package!
:-D
Have a good job Charlie.
I have just finished writing my 40-pages short story, one out of 7 which will be included in my Antology.
What a hard job's been!
See you on these forums again! :-D
