Question Modem ttyS0

Hi everybody: I just installed SuSe 7.3. Works fine, but I can't get kinternet to connect to the internet. In the help pages it describes how to use two consoles to send an AT to the modem on ttyS0. I did that and it returns an OK, which is good. But when I watch the action of kinternet in the log display, it starts the dialup and hangs there. The help files seem to be saying that the modem cable may be at fault, not fully wired, although it works under windows. Does anyone know the proper wiring scheme? A drawing would help, then I could check it myself. I use a US Robotics Sportster Message Plus, external, and it works fine on Windows.
