Modem Dont Work
Just installed Red Hat 7.2 (Workstation) on my PC at home. Having trouble getting my modem working. Set up the irq for the port to match the jumpers, echo'd commands to the port (eg echo "ATDT123" > /dev/ttyS2) but all i get is a click from the modem. Modem is a US Robotics Sportster 56k Internal ISA.
Am i missing something obvious?
Dont think its a conflict as i removed / disabled other cards etc to check this out and still got the same.
Any suggestions welcome.
Cheers!

Thank you vector for this sound, and cheap solution!
However, i was hoping for a bit of advise getting an apparently sound modem working. For all i know i mite get the same prob with an external, or another. 100 quid out of pocket, i do not wish to be.
Please, please, please ... suggestions that dont involve a large outlay of money!

Sportster
I am not a guru, but here are actually usefull suggestions other
than 'I am dense, I should use windows' style comments.
Tips for modem usage
1) Using 'ATDT123' might not work if the modem has got itself in a state first, try AT&F1 (Use HW flow control default)
(i) To achive better results from a modem, set as many values as possible, manually setting these and a high baud rate can
make a massive difference to connect/download speeds.
2) If you are using RH7.2 there is a modemtool, type modem press tab and see what tools come along, one of them should
auto detect/install your modem.
3) Use the highest baud rate possible, i.e. keep on going up
until your modem doesn't work. start at the lowest and work up
4)Check the Phone cable, sportsters use special cables that
will not work on any other modems, nice! NOT. I think they are crossovers!
5) if you are echo-ing a command to ttyS0 then before you do this
cat /dev/ttyS0& then the result code will come out on the screen!
