Modem connected but cant open sites at all

Hello

I just installed FC2 on my pc and i seem to have a little problem. Im using KPPP to connect to internet. When im trying to open any locations i get a "Could not resolve website.tld. Same goes when im trying to ping site from terminal. Modem seems to work fine, packets are coming and going. With FC1 never had such a problem, any ideas what could be wrong? (im a total linux newbie btw)

Thank you in advance

Have you tried pinging using ipaddresses instead of hostnames.

Check the entries in your /etc/resolv.conf. Either you don't have any nameserver entries in /etc/resolv.conf or the nameservers are not resolving or you have iptables rules that are blocking dns traffic.

No, i didnt tried ip's, only hostnames. Will do that when i get home. If that wont work either? Or if its pinging ip's ok? (Sorry to be a pain, this is only time i can access internet till after weekend if i dont find a solution for it)

Hey, man. I've been having the same trouble recently (got a Intel 536EP). KPPP worked fine with Mandrake 10, but it was totally messed up in FC2. Well, I did some searching through these forums and found the answer. I would post a link to that forum, but I just closed that tab on my browser and I don't think Mozilla has a "History" bar like IE (I'm not sure -- I'm still a ).

Anyway, I think if you were to run kppp from the konsole, you would probably get two big errors:

1) Something to the effect of: can't find device ppp0

2) Can't find /etc/ppp/resolve.conf

Well, after some google searching I found that the device error is not a problem. As long as you can go under the KPPP configure menu and click on the "Query Modem" and it detects your modem OK (it will say it's busy if you are connected through the other dialer), then you're fine. The other error is solved quite simply. Just copy your /etc/resolve.conf file into your /etc/ppp/ folder. That's it! KPPP works fine for me now.

If this doesn't work, let me know!

God bless!

Seems the problem was with the nameservers, in FC2 (mine atleast) they dont autoupdate. Had to enter them manualy in network settings. Thank you both for your time

Edit: ppguru, i just saw your edit (it doesnt inform you as "new post"), that was the problem. Thanks
