Modem Activation Error

I installed the software from linuxant for my Conextant HCF internal PCI modem, which I was told is a hardware modem (I'm still in doubt).
All went fine until I tried to activate it. It then came up with 'failed to activate ppp0 error code 8"
Any ideas? This is starting to become a nightmare.
I am using Redhat 9.
Thanks

If you need to install software it's probably not a hardware modem.
Anyway, have you checked your kernel configuration? You'll need ppp support built in. This could be the problem?
