mod_perl woes: upgrade or downgrade httpd?

I can't get 1.99.x of mod_perl to play nicely with Apache 2.0.40

I hear that this "version 2" of mod_perl is just a buggy dog, so I'm tempted to downgrade and use "version 1" with apache 1.3.x or somesuch.

What is the conventional wisdom here :
- what versions truly work well together?
- what do you lose in downgrading apache?
- what is the easiest to install/maintain?

(I'm running RH 9.0). Thanks!
