mkv subtitles problem

Having an interesting problem with playing some .mkv matroska files. I have tried multiple mkv files with multiple programs(VLC, Xine, Totem, Mplayer) and have been having the same problems in each.(with a few distinctions)
Totem for one is no longer giving me any audio for mkv files, but its the only one.

The main problem that is occuring is involved in the subtitles. Video plays fine in all, audio plays fine in everything except Totem (and on occasion one other, irregardless it always works in VLC). The problem is that when i try to enable subtitles, after a short time it will cause a segmentation fault in the program and crash it. The following is some of the last lines of verbose output given by VLC -v before the crash:
Code:

[00000326] main audio output warning: buffer is 89867 in advance, triggering downsampling
[00000339] subsdec decoder warning: subtitle without a date

I've been searching around and haven't found any solution, only a number of other people having the same problems. I even manually compiled vlc's .deb packages rather than using ubuntu's package manager in order to make sure that --enable-mkv was included in the configuration file.

EDIT: Furthermore, Xine won't show the subtitles at all.

Another wierd bit of information just from playing around with it a while, it only crashes if both subtitles are on and I try to resize the video at all.

What a specific, yet annoying, problem.
