Mjpg-Streamer and newer kernels

Is there a way to get the old v4l api into the new 3.0 kernel of Ubuntu 11.10? I want to run MJPG-Streamer, using the input plugin "" for capturing camera video on my BTTV TV card. It appears this input plugin only will work with the old v4l api, not v4l2. It works only if I revert to an older kernel that still has the deprecated v4l api. I've searched for an answer without success so far.

I have since given up and reverted to Ubuntu 10.04LTS with the older kernel that will run Mjpg-streamer. That wasn't fun. I had a lot of trouble getting rxtx for serial port access and parport for parallel port access to work but did finally get it. Now I'm fighting ffmpeg, trying to get it to work, serving a sound stream. I should have known installing the latest version from svn on an older kernel would be problematic.
