Missing symbols in equations of .doc documents opened with OOo in FC4
 

I have a problem when I open Word documents with mathematical equiations from the university. Some symbols as sums, infinty, brackest, matrixes are missing. The problem occurs in my FC4 instalation and only with .doc files. I opened these files in other distribution without incoveniences. I have installed almost any existing font for xorg, gtk o Gnome but nothing happened.
Somebody have any idea of wht to do?

Yes, I do. And I can edit equations with OOo Math and Latex without problems.
I think that the problem is more related somehow as how the equations from Word are rendered by OOo.
But, how knows? There also symbols and/ or formats, as integrals, that I get fine at the documents. The problem persists even if I export to ther formats as .odt or pdf.

Yes it does make a difference also by how (and which font version) the equations are embedded in the Word document. Some versions of Word are harder to import/export correctly then others which is always a problem with undocumented proprietary formats.

This is why propriety formats like Word suck. I realize that you probably don't have the time to convert all your documents to Latex, but you should consider just using Latex. Word has nothing on Latex (except giving you problems like these). Unfortunately, I don't have the solution to your current problem, but if you just avoid Word (or even OpenOffice, if you're doing equations), these sorts of problems wouldn't crop up in the first place.

I agree with you. I usually use OOo Math to edith equtions, but say that to the guy who writes down the exercises and notes of the comples variable course:p.

Well you could try OOo-2.0.3 from OpenOffice.org (filters are somewhat better) but Krelian has the best idea.

Some have found importing word docs into OOo for Windows then saving as odt/pdf a workaround solution (I cannot say for sure never tried it), maybe use wine/crossover for this.

I used to open these files with the Ubuntu live cd or Knoppix( OOo 1.9b!) and save them as .pdf. But,it is supossed to be an unnescessary work. It will be a good integartion with the Gnome desktop if I´ll install OOo from OpenOffice.rog?
