missing minimize/quit buttons in applications

Minimize button/maximize buttons not available in all applications. I visited the similar threads and did not see a solution. I tried logging into the alternate user account and do not have these buttons, either, also in that account I do not have taskbar at the bottom. It is not affecting anything else that I can determine, just annoying not to have these buttons to allow me to switch back and forth between applications.
Linux aspire.

It might be easier if you would identify some of the applications that lack the minimize and quite buttons. Your user agent icon says you are using Ubuntu. If so, what version, or, if not, what Linux distro/version are you using?

Also, what desktop environment/window manager are you using?

What is the output of

Code:

cat /etc/*release*
If that doesn't return anything, you might try

Code:

cat /etc/*version*
and other variants.
