missing make command

Hi guys. I was wondering if somebody could tell me where I can download the make command binary or rpm package.
I get "bash: make: command not found"
The paths are all ok, make isn't anywhere to be found.

I installed SuSE 9.1 personal and it didn't come with gcc nor with make. I have no idea why. I found the appropriate gcc packages but don't know how to get make.
I looked in YaST and when I type in make the only thing that comes up is "xdg-menu" package. I don't seem to even have the ability to check it, it's just not there.
So should I be worried about the integrity of my installation?

thanks

the integrety of your instalation? that should be no problem, lots of people run their Linux without dev tools (gcc or make etc...)

but if you are looking for a distro with good dev tools give Slackware a spin on your computer, it has great dev tools...

yes, I know that it's possible to use linux without compilers, but SuSE 9.1 personal should have come with them.
And where do I get make?? The CD doesn't seem to have a package called make*.

you could try http://rpmfind.net/ if SuSE/Novell does not have an ftp of packages archived available to the public...

Change your Yast install source to one of the FTP mirrors and then search within yast for make or whatever package you need. This is how I installed "make". Make sure you move down or disable the cdrom install source.

It's kind of a pain in the butt to setup (well until you figure it out), but easier if you use one of the sites from the online update part of yast.

Later,
M

thanks for the tip on using the ftp for YaST update instead of the CD, that's what I did!

Lightbulb If you cannot access the web yet

All true.

However, if other users like me cannot access the internet from their Linux implementation yet then the following worked for me:

On another system go to ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.1/suse/i586/ where you will find a huge range of .rpm files with the missing commands.

I downloaded the following:

make-3.80-184.i586
gcc-3.3.3-41.i586

The latter needs a couple of extra files first (as you will be told if you try to install it first without them)

glibc-devel-2.3.3-98.i586
binutils-2.15.90.0.1.1-31.i586

I burnt these to a CD under windows then mounted the CD on my Linux system. I opened a Konquerer session to view the CD. Clicking on the file gave me an option to install it which worked perfectly.

I also installed C++ and Java versions of gcc for later, but I don't think they are necessary for basic use of gcc.

Hope this helps.
