What do you mean you weren't able to find vlc? What about typing "vlc" in terminal?

Gnome 3 at its best...
I'm sure you can add vlc to your menu. There must be a function somewhere since vlc is installed in your system.

2 ideas:
1. look to see if Gnome 3 has a menu editor.
2. Set a keyboard shortcut lo launch it with the media key (if your computer has one) or something like Super [aka the windows key] + v.

To add a program to menu right-click on desktop enter command "alacarte" it will allow editing menu. Or just go to "Main Menu" in applications.
To show desktop
enable-desktop-icons-and-right-click-gnome-3-gnome-shell-ubuntu-11-04
