I'm running LM 18.3 and apparently have managed to hose some icons. Synaptic, update manager and likely a few more are missing icons, i.e., there are no icons in the toolbars. Been working on this for awhile and haven't figured it out yet. If anyone has any pearls of wisdom........
I very much appreciate the reply but I probably misstated the problem... the missing icons are actually within the applications. For example, on the synaptic toolbar you have the text Reload, Apply, Properties, etc. Above each is a generic 'icon', probably some sort of fallback, but the icons that were originally in those positions are gone. Certainly not the end of the world but it would be nice to have them back.

Check the toolbar settings within the application(s). There's often a choice of Icons, Text, or Both.
In Thunderbird, I get there by right-clicking on the toolbar itself.
Not to anticipate you but I've already tried that. There is some sort of placeholder 'icon' above the text but the original icons that were embedded in the application are missing. There is a very good chance that the icon set had been deleted. I've installed several icon set to try to solve the problem but so far no joy.
