missing basesystem package????

im installing mandrake on my comp but when i get to the choose packages to install on the text install it says error missing basesystem

the harddrive hase been reformatted so im starting fresh

Not good, are you installing form cd? Did you download the isos? Did you check the MD5 before you burnt them? I've had a problem similar to this (except it was the kernel, not a basesystem package) with mandrake that i traced back to a corrupt iso.

actually i went to the store and bought mandrake so i figured it wouldnt be corrupted but i dont know

It seems it is always the problem with Mandrake, I am pretty sure the files are on CD and CD is OK, try install again and again, or ditch Mandy, and get something else, like SUSE or RedHat (these three are among favorites for newbies ).
