Question Minimum Requirements

I'm wondering what are the minimum requiremts software wise to just get a kernel to boot? I tried just having the kernel in a boot directory with no other files on the system and loading that with grub but the sytem just hangs. So I'm guessing that I'm missing some critical files that the kernel needs. So if anybody could post what is needed or a link to where I could get such information that would be great.

Depends of the distribution. I've Linux running in a 386 with 8 MB RAM and IceWM (Greycat Linux, based on Slackware 3.5) as Window Manager. Since all you want is to boot the kernel theoretically, any distribution will do. I'd recommend something like Debian or an older Slackware with 2.4.x-kernel (or less), since they are 386 optimized.

Again, it all depends how low you wanna/need to go...
