Have you done the inital setup using the -s option while running as root? If so, what device (/dev/ttyS0, etc) is it configured for and is there an entry for that device in in /dev?

Use su to become root. (You might, instead, be able to do this using sudo -- I don't know.) Then give the command

Code:
minicom -s
Select Serial port setup and set the Serial Device to /dev/ttyUSB0. Change any other serial parameters that you want in the system wide configuration file and return to the main menu by pressing escape. Use the other menu entries as desired to change other parameters for the system wide configuration file. When you finsihed changing parameters, be sure to select Save setup as fdl, which will write (I sound like a broken record ) the default system wide configuration file, /etc/minirc.dfl. You can then select Exit from Minicom. Normal users can now use minicom to access /dev/ttyUSB0. Note that there are some parameters that normal users can set in their individual configuration files, while some parametres (such as the device) may only be set by root.

Note that one traditional source of information for programs on a *nix system is the man pages (man is short for manual.) You just type man followed by the name of the program. So for minicom, type:

man minicom
