migrating unix mail to linux

Hi everyone.

We are considering changing our email system from a UNIX-based system run by the university, over to a Linux system that we would be administering ourselves. The main hurdle we will be facing is in moving all of our users mailboxes from the old system to the linux one. I am running Sendmail on our test system and supposedly that is what is running on our current servers, but the mailbox files don't match up to make it easy to move between the two. Here is what it looks like currently:

Current system - /var/spool/mail/username has 2 item in it. One named mbox which holds the current inbox messages, and another named username which holds any new email that comes in that hasn't been opened.

Our test system on RedHat Linux 9 has /var/spool/mail/username , but only single files for each user, which holds the inbox messages. It seems that any new email that comes in goes directly into the users inbox folder.

Is there any easy way to either merge the two files in our current system, or to break up the single file on the Linux system? The only thing I can come up with is to move all the unread messages to the inbox of the user, disconnect the system so that no new mail can be added, and then copy the single inbox file over to Linux. Anybody have a better suggestion? Thanks

I think you've got mbox on your unix server and mbx on linux. Maybe look around for an utility to convert the former.
