Migrating from Mandrake to Fedora
 

hi there to all the Linux Gurus,

THE SITUATION:
I have installed Mandrake 8.2 on my XP system, with dual boot. Boot magic prompts me to choose my os, which is set to xp by default.

Now i want myself indulge more into Linux, n so have downloaded the latest Fedora 5 Final, and burned it into a DVD.
The Big Question:
Can i directly migrate from Mandrake to Fedora, as both are basically Linux OS.
Or do i need to uninstall Mandrake and then install Fedora.

And plz do explain your solution at length and welcome one more newbie into your FEDORA FOLD.

You cannot transform a Mandrake system into a Fedora one. You can however install Fedora in place of Mandrake (the latter being wiped out by the former).

If you created a separate /home partition when you installed Mandrake, you should be able to keep this partition intact and reuse it upon installing Fedora; this is however not necessarily a good idea, as Mandrake 8.2 is really old, and the structure of a number of configuration files may have changed between then and the more current Fedora 5.

Were I you, I would simply backup (eg: to CD) my personnal data and /etc folder (for refering to it for net/graphics/web... config), and make a clean install without keeping anything.

As for your problem, there is no need to remove Mandrake. Use the same partitions for the Fedora Core installation and the Mandrake stuff will be overwritten.

Grub
 

some ppl r tellin me to remove bootmagic n go for grub. wht do u all think.
is it ok to go with grub. wht if i am struck halfway. will i be able to boot to either windows or linux.

n wht is the way out if i want to remove grub later.

Sorry, I don't have experience in this area with either Windows or Bootmagic. At home, I only use Linux, and only have 1 distro per PC...

for ppl with similar probs,

atlast i've done it without much ado.

i removed bootmagic. then went with my fc5 installation, installed grub on my /boot, instead of the mbr. rebooted into windows, n using bootpart edited my boot.ini to include fc5, n voila, i have both of them running.
