Angry midnight commander save settings makes new ini file

Hi,
I'm irritated by the following problem with midnight commander. When I've made a change in the ini file in /home/dinges/.mc/ini, and then do a 'configuration...save setup' my changes are gone. So the ini file can't be made effective at all. It took me a while to remember that I had to disable ' autosave' because when that is enabled, you cannot even make your changes permanent after saving them. They are gone the next time you start mc!
I use Fedora Core 3, with mc 4.6.1-pre1a.
Does anyone have a suggestion to make my settings permanent?
