Midnight Commander Linux vs FreeBSD

New to FreeBSD. Installing it on an older machine BEFORE I put it on my main puter. Have already successfully installed Mandrake 8.2 on same machine > booted into KDE desktop without a problem and have been able to use Midnight Commander in Linux without a problem. After installing FreeSD 4.5 and rebooting I cannot get into a GUI. Login as root > "startx" fails. I need to get into the Xf86Configuration file. I do this in Linux no problem. I added the package for Midnight Commander via /stand/sysinstall. I can bring up Midnight Commander via "midc" but it doesn't function the same way as it does in Linux > I can move the mouse around and highlight a file but none of the upper or lower menu's work. MC is the limit of of my editing capabilities. Any ideaas to what's wrong here? Dazed and Confused- Tuzinor

LOL. That's good. I love it when I use up all my tricks and can't get something done.

I learned FreeBSD is entirely different from Linux. It's a wilder species of animals. It can't be tamed with same Linux skills.

First off, what's the error of startx?

Have you run xf86config?
