this system needs to be spread around to a few other boxes.

MS Exchange does not like to share with other services. it should be on a box of its own.

wingate proxy needs to be on a slower box with a pair of high end NICs.

AD can be on all win2k servers, but you might not want to run it on the Exchange server. i personaly avoid it on that server as Exchange is such a pig, but it can be safely done.

now to convert all of that to Linux.

Exchange can be replaced with a combination of other mail servers and clients combined with some calander serviers tha are out there. do a serch on this site for that info. i know i have read several posts along those lines. heck there are even pay for Linux Exchange type programs out there.

for the wingate proxy, just setup IPTABLES and IPMASQ(i think that is the proper term for it) and it will act as both your firewall and NAT router.

AD is replaced by the standard group, unit, user permission in linux. heck that is were M$ got the concept from.

Nav. only needed if you keep M$ OS as clients.

SQL can be converted to MySQL... i have heard some conflicting issues with the most current SQL and MySQL servers though so check into that.

no clue about the Foxpro stuff for dos, but you might want to look into the wine project especialy the office portion.

if they are running win98 and are computers from that time frame you might want to look into getting an OLDER distro that was around in that time frame for better performance.

Outlook can be replaced by a dozen or so other e-mail clients, same goes for OE. you can now just use 1 client.

word and excel can be replaced with OO (OpenOffice)

no clue about VB, and again with Nav no need to have it running linux.

again as for the foxpro and VB the bigger guys around here will have to answere those questions, but i would just google them.

word and excel as mentioned to be replaced with OO and for secure mail, that can be done too.

so yes what you are looking to do should be doable, but if you do not know linux, it would behoove the company to pay for a linux pro to come in and set things up and tech you how to deal with the majority of the administrative activities you will need to learn. the 80-100K spent on the linux pro to completely move the servers up to linux and the clients along with teaching the IT staff how to manage it would be well worth the time saved and a smoother conversion.

best of luck.

If you wish to move the clients onto Linux, here are some suggestions I offer:

Mozilla Thunderbird - one of the best programs for email clients.
OpenOffice - Since your computers are using Win98, I'm doubting that they're running state-of-the-art Microsoft Office on them, so OpenOffice would probably be the most similar program and the most compatible.

You could also look into Codeweaver's Crossover Office, which uses a custom version fo Wine that's tailored for people who want to use Office. It basically is the WineX for MS Office. You could try it out one one computer and see if the applications will work properly. If they do, then you could consider moving most/all of the clients onto Linux. This will help out by having their computers crash less, and could also make the network safer. Then you could still keep your program server to run your Microsoft programs, and hopefully it should be safe (I would do a clean sweep on the MS computer, then reinstall the programs, just to make it as clean and safe as possible, getting possible spyware and viruses off of it).

I suggest Gentoo because programs can be compile for the Pentium 4 system that will provide an extra boost in performance. Compiling apache, ssl, mysql, mail server, samba, ssh, and webmin will not take long. Redhat 9 will run a little slower on a Pentium 4 because of the penalty of running a none P4 optimize code. If the Pentium 4 processor is not a Northwood core than it is time to upgrade.

I suggest setting up an IMAP server instead of a POP3 because dealing with POP3 email accounts on the client side gets tricky. The e-mail program I recommend is Mozilla Thunderbird because Outlook Express is very vulnerable. Thunderbird can run in many operating systems. Outlook Express has problems with IMAP servers.

I suggest using clamav to scan for viruses on the server that will handle samba shares. Use tunneling or virtual private network if samba is going to be access over the internet.

Squid should be used as an HTTP cache server and then use iptables to protect the system from attacks. Install smoothwall on another system that will be the firewall that redirects to certain servers.

Use nessus to test the firewall.

Install a rootkit scanner on the server to check for any rootkits.

ReactOS can be replacement for Windows 98.

How about posting in a new thread instead of reviving one that was last posted to over a year and a half ago.
