Microprocessor and Linux

For now, I am just a substitute to a microprocessor subject beause the current instructor was on leave and I had to take his place within his absence.
I noticed that most of them have a failing grade in this subject and I was thinking of giving them a research to pull their grades up, and I was considering of giving them a research on linking the microprocessor with Linux. A research in which they should earn their points not just the easy way.

Could you please suggest me of any topic which can be covered by this: Microprocessor and Linux.
